The Philippine Azkals ended their dismal Suzuki Cup campaign with a bang, thanks to the heroics of naturalized Filipino Bienvinido Maranon, who scored a hat trick against Myanmar, 3-2, to end their Group A campaign.

The Azkals finished third in the group with six points, next to group winners and title favorites Thailand, which finished with a perfect 12 points in four matches after its 2-0 win over Singapore.

Singapore finished second and ended its group stage heart break, while the Azkals finished third and failed to advance to the knockout stage for just the second time in six editions. The Azkals made the semifinals of Southeast Asia’s biggest tournament in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018 and missed out in 2016 and 2021.

Maranon, the Ceres superstar who was just naturalized this year, gave the Philippines a comfortable 3-0 lead in the first half with goals in the 16th, 19th and 45 minutes.

Myanmar fought back and made it 3-2 with goals in the 74th and 86th but it was a little too late. (AP)
