Mary Jane Veloso’s parents urge SC to let her testify vs recruiters

Filipino death-row prisoner Mary Jane Veloso

Parents of convicted drug mule Mary Jane Veloso asked the Supreme Court to reverse the appellate court ruling disallowing Mary Jane to testify against her recruiters while she is in Indonesia.

Mary Jane’s mother, Celia Veloso, recounted her last conversation with her daughter.

The Court of Appeals junked her appeal to present her testimony in the Philippines

Her family also sought to suspend the trial of the case against her recruiters Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao until her request is granted

It was in 2016 when a Nueva Ecija court ruled to get Maryjane’s statement via written disposition

Josalee Deinla of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL).

Her recruiters’ legal counsel also elevated to the Supreme Court their argument that Veloso cannot undergo cross-examination which the appellate court favored

The case of the Filipina OFW stems from her arrest in 2010 by Indonesian authorities who seized 2.6 kg of heroin inside her luggage that she allegedly intended to smuggle into Malaysia. — Mai Bermudez
