A video showing a health care worker from Makati failing to press the plunger on a vaccine jab has gone viral (unfortunate pun unintended). The recipient of the vaccine did not notice that the health care worker had not administered the jab, and left unvaccinated.
Today, Makati Mayor Abby Binay and the Department of Health issued separate statements about the alarming breach in vaccine protocol.
The video, which circulated widely on social media today, June 28, was apparently shot on June 25 and brought to the attention of the authorities on June 26, said Mayor Binay. Binay said in her statement that the vaccine recipient was given the vaccine after the complaint was raised.
“It was a human error on the part of the volunteer nurse,” Binay said. “We simply ask for understanding from the public. Mahigit isang taon na pong naghihirap at nagtratrabaho ang ating mga frontliners…Tao lang po ang ating mga frontliners—napapagod, nagkakamali.”
In the meantime, the Department of Health also issued an official statement, saying that “The Department is investigating this breach in vaccine protocol with the LGU concerned, and reminds all vaccinators to take extra care and attention during inoculation.”
There has been no indication that the authorities think this was deliberate, though social media users were up in arms about the mistake.
This is not the first time this has happened. Earlier this year, another video showing a jab not being adminstered also made rounds internationally. This earlier video, however, was widely attributed to India, though fact-checkers have shown that it was shot in Mexico.
