WHEN the price of commodities goes up, here in Lapu-Lapu City power rates will be going down. Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan made this announcement in his recent social media post.

“Kung naglabad ang inyong ulo tungod sa kataas sa inyung bayrunon sa kuryente, para kini ninyo,” read Mayor Chan’s October 29 social media post.

Mayor Chan explained that in a recent public hearing, Mactan Electric Company (Meco) introduced a new power generation supplier that sells cheaper electricity.

So, from its previous supplier that sells electricity at P14 per kilowatt hour (kWh), its new supplier sells it at P3.30 per kWh.

“Buot pasabot, moubos sa 74 percent ang inyung bayrunon sa kuryente matag buwan,” read the mayor ‘s post.

This issue came up when Chan attended the recent public hearing on electricity.

“Maong mitambong gayud kita sa hearing para kita maoy mopadala sa tingog sa mga katawhan ug para madungog ang atong hangyo nga makabaton ang Meco og bag-ong supplier sa kuryente nga katulo ang pilo sa kabarato niini,” the mayor stated in his post.

During the public hearing, Meco announced that the company agrees to the entry of a new power generation supplier, the San Miguel Consolidated Power Corporation (SMCPC).

SMCPC supplies power at the rate of P3.30 per kWh., which slashed three-fourths from the current rate to come up with this lower rate.

“Maong akong gihangyo nga wala untay mamahimong babag sa kalampusan nga madaog ang hearing kay para kini tanan sa pobreng mga Oponganon nga dugay nang nag-antos sa kataas sa presyo sa kuryente,” Mayor Chan stated in his post.

Electricity goes through the process of generation, transmission and distribution.

Generation companies create electricity. These are Kepco SPC Power Corporation; Cebu Energy Development Corporation; East Asia Utilities Corporation; SMCPC and many others.

Electric power transmission, via the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, links power generators and distribution utilities. (PR)
