MCWD to hike rates once supply is available

THE increase in water rates will only be imposed once the consumers feel water supply is available.

This was what the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) assured its consumers as it enters into a water desalination project with FDC Utilities Inc., a subsidiary of Filinvest Development Corp. (FDC).

John Neville Macabenta, MCWD's acting corporate planning department manager, said the FDC targets to start the distribution of desalinated water by next year.

Macabenta said should this push through, the increase of the water rates may be implemented by 2024.

"Considering mahal ang desalination, adunay effects sa price, but the direction sa Board kay dili mi mu-increase kung di ma-feel sa taw nga naay tubig," said Macabenta.

The MCWD also needs to seek first the approval of the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) shouldbit increase its prices.

MCWD is currently in negotiation with two utility firms for two separate water desalination projects. (JJL)
