MEGACRYL and Wall-Art will clash in the finals of the Architects + Engineers Basketball Club 5th Davies Paints Cup after they outlasted their respective opponents in the semifinals at the University of San Carlos gym on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020.
Megacryl edged Sun & Rain, 86-82, while Wall-Art eliminated Powerfloor, 92-86, to set up the finals showdown on Feb. 8 at the same venue.
Megacryl leaned on a furious fourth period showing to put down Sun & Rain, which actually led for most of the way before crumbling in the end. Sun & Rain led, 82-74, with just three minutes left in the game but the tides turned after the team’s ace big man Arnel Cordero fouled out.
Megacryl then pounced, dominating the game’s latter stages to pick up the win and earn the ticket to the finals. Ed Macasling led Megacryl with 34 points and seven rebounds while former University of Southern Philippines Foundation standout Jett Latonio almost had a triple-double with 23 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists. The former commercial basketball ace also did damage on the defensive end of the floor, piling up two steals and five blocked shots.
Meanwhile, Wall-Art started strong and then, held off Powerfloor in the end, to barge into the finals. Wall-Art led by 21, 52-31, at halftime but suddenly let its foot off the gas pedal to allow Powerfloor to come to within two, 60-58. However, Wall-Art regained its bearings, finishing the third period with a long buzzer-beating triple from Christopher Gayotin to stay in front, 68-57.
Kurt Vanguardia and Chester Hinagdanan then started the fourth with several baskets in transition to help take the fight out of Powerfloor.
Hinagdanan played incredible basketball for Wall-Art with 32 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Gayotin finished with 14 points, while Jonas Panerio had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Ivan Dominguez chipped in 10 points. (JNP)
