MENDIOLA FC 1991 did the unthinkable and forced a 0-0 draw with heavily-favored Kaya FC-Iloilo in the Philippines Football League (PFL) on Friday, Nov. 6, 2020 at the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
Mendiola FC 1991 came into the match as the huge underdog after losing its first two matches and sitting at the bottom of the league.
Kaya FC-Iloilo controlled the match early on with attempts by Carlyle Mitchell, Jayson Panhay, Daizo Horikoshi and Kenshiro Daniels. However, Mendiola FC 1991 Kenry Balobo, a product of Cebu’s Don Bosco Technical Center, was quick on his feet along with a very disciplined backline.
Mendiola FC 1991 had a chance to take the lead just before halftime but Louie Polinag’s attempt was foiled by Kaya FC-Iloilo goalie Louie Casas.
Mendiola FC 1991 came into the second half swinging with a missed header by Aaron Atiche.
Mendiola’s defense was again tested after goal attempts by Jovin Bedic, Masanari Omura and Arnel Amita.
In the final 10 minutes of the match, Kaya FC-Iloilo felt the sense of urgency and aggressively attacked Mendiola FC 1991 led by the charge of Eric Giganto and Emanuel Osei but Balobo was just too good and walked away with a clean sheet.
Mendiola FC 1991 finally got its first point of the tournament but is still at the bottom of the table. Kaya FC-Iloilo still trails defending champion United City FC at second place with eight points.
As of press time, Maharlika Manila FC took on Azkals Development Team, while UCFC faced off with Stallion Laguna FC. / EKA
