Meralco gets past NorthPort in PBA Philippine Cup

THE Meralco Bolts are heading to the quarterfinals with some momentum as they notched an 80-73 win over NorthPort on Wednesday, November 11, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Pampanga.

The Bolts ended the elimination round with a 7-4 (win-loss) record, tying the likes of San Miguel, Alaska and TNT. The seeding of the teams that qualified for the next round will be known when all the games on Wednesday conclude.

In contrast, NorthPort ended their campaign with a whimper. Losers of six straight games, the Batang Pier fell behind by as much as 19 points and will exit the “bubble” with a 1-10 mark.

Bong Quinto paced Meralco with 14 points, thanks to four makes from beyond the arc. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Raymond Almazan and Chris Newsome chipped in 11 points apiece with the former securing the victory with a layup with just 24 seconds remaining in the game.

NorthPort, which played without top big man Christian Standhardinger, got a double-double effort from veteran forward Jervy Cruz, who had 15 points and 17 rebounds. (JNP)
