Meralco’s prolific guard Baser Amer has been traded to Blackwater in exchange for former top pick and versatile forward Mac Belo.
The blockbuster trade came on the same day that the league approved the controversial trade that sent scoring champion CJ Perez from Terrafirma to the mighty San Miguel Beermen in exchange for three reserve players and two first-round draft picks.
The trade papers for the Amer-Belo trade have already been sent to the PBA Commissioner’s Office for assessment.
According to sources, Blackwater’s need for a pure point guard forced them to give up the former number one overall pick in the 2016 PBA Rookie Draft. Belo averaged 11.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and an assist per game in the 2020 Philippine Cup. The 6-foot-4 forward from Cotabato has also played for the national team in 2013 and the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.
On the other hand, Amer has been the starting point guard for the Bolts ever since the retirement of one-time league MVP Jimmy Alapag. Picked seventh overall in the 2015 draft, the 28-year old is a three-time All-Star who averaged 9.82 points, 2.2 rebounds and three assists per game in the last PBA tournament. (JNP)
