Metro Manila records lowest temperature during Amihan season

Metro Manila recorded its lowest temperature during the northeast monsoon or Amihan season on Sunday (Jan 16), according to state weather bureau.

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Ana Clauren said that Metro Manila recorded a temperature of 19.7°C at the Science Garden in Quezon City, the lowest recorded temperature this Amihan season. It is lower than the previous recorded lowest temperature of 20.2°C on Dec 6, 2021.

Clauren said Metro Manila could still experience a temperature lower than 19.7°C as the Amihan season, which started in October, may last until mid-March.

PAGASA recorded the top 10 lowest temperatures at the following stations on Sunday:

1. Baguio City, Benguet (11.0°C)

2. Tanay, Rizal (18.0°C)

3. Casiguran, Aurora (18.6°C)

4. Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (18.6°C)

5. Malaybalay, Bukidnon (19.0°C)

6. Basco, Batanes (19.1°C)

7. San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (19.1°C)

8. Sinait, Ilocos Sur (19.5°C)

9. Science Garden, Quezon City (19.7°C)

10. Abucay, Bataan (19.8°C)

According to PAGASA’s records, Metro Manila reported its lowest ever temperature on January 11,1914 at 14.5°C.

Amihan is the northeast monsoon, which is a cool and dry northeast wind coming from Siberia and China and blows down to Southeast Asia. This season is characterized with slight to moderate rainfall and a prevailing cold wind that affects east of the Philippines.
