Mga ‘Kwentong Metro’: Celebrating 40 years of The Metro Stores

WHEN The Metro Stores opened in 1982, Cebuanos were introduced to a unique retail shopping experience that revolutionized the city’s—and the region’s—quality of life. The vision of Victor and Sally Gaisano was to provide world-class products at prices that are friendly to customers who are building dreams and raising families. This vision has catapulted the brand to become one of the most loved retailers in the country today, with branches across the Philippines.

With 40 years of making customers happy, it is undeniable that the brand affinity of The Metro Stores is best seen in the shopping experiences of the cross-generational families who still shop at Metro Supermarket and Metro Department Store, and the hardworking team who unceasingly extends the best possible service to customers. In this special feature, The Metro Stores puts the spotlight on some of the most memorable “Kwentong Metro” from customers whose lives have been integrated with the beloved retail brand.

When I was in high school, I would come to the Metro Department store before my ballet classes and I would buy Body Music leotards and tights—that was the only thing available back then, and it’s so nice to still see it until today!

I practically grew up with Metro since I lived and studied around the area, so Metro Ayala was really our go-to store, and I know this store by heart from the basement to the highest floor. My favorite thing about Metro, aside from its wide selection of merchandise, is its people. They’re very cheerful, helpful and attentive, but at the same time, they know when not to tailgate—they give you space to browse. And through the years, I still see some familiar faces, which probably means that Metro values its people, and that’s good to know.⁣

My kwentong Metro is that it’s one of my go-to places to shop. As a busy momma, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone because I get to have some me-time and finish my errands at the same time.

I always find the best deals and offers at The Metro Stores. As a practical mom, I love that I am able to save money because of their discounted prices and bundles. I love that they often have sales like health & beauty fairs, back to school sales, home and appliance sales etc. Truly a one-stop shop! Plus, I am an MRC member too, so I get to enjoy more perks and freebies. Truly making my life easier! Thanks so much to The Metro Stores, and happy anniversary.

Why do I love shopping at The Metro Stores? At Metro they make our lives easy! #WeMakeLifeEasy.

This is a plus factor for me because it eliminates the trouble of having to go to different places to complete my shopping list. It helps me save time and effort for my kitchen items, baking tools, appliances, my grocery list and many more!

Another good reason to shop at the Metro Stores is that the items are very budget-friendly. There are a variety of colors, styles, and designs, and I’m sure there’s always something that will suit your tastes, and styles for your home. At syempre, as a kikay fashionista like me, hindi makakalimutan ang ladies section.

In short, everything I need is at the Metro!”

I’m now 44 years old, so I practically grew up in Metro. When I was a child, I’d go with my lola to the grocery store. I enjoyed doing the groceries at Metro as a child, high school student, and eventually college student.

In college, I studied in USJR, so during lunch, my friends and I would get up, go to the Metro, tambay there, then we would eat there. And lastly, when I was in ABS-CBN for 20 years, I was assigned to most of the Metro Stores projects, such as “Wish Upon a Car” or the “Back to School” promos. Metro is like family to me; my go-to store.

I still remember my first time going to The Metro Stores, sobrang excited ako noon—syempre bago sa paningin ko.

(I was so excited then—of course I’d be excited because it was all so new to me. I will never forget this store because this is where I bought the first bag I really liked. From the moment I enter, my smile never fades. My memories of Metro Stores are different; whenever I come home after visiting, I never have any regrets.)

When I go grocery shopping, I’m on a mission to get my necessities. So, I go to a store that has a variety of ingredients and products, offers good deals and where customer service is great. For me, that store is The Metro Stores Supermarket!

The Metro Supermarket is like a treasure trove waiting to be explored. It has aisles of different food categories—from the freshest produce, seafood and meat to amazing international food selections. The items that I love to buy there are pre-sliced fruits and veggies for snacking or for use on my favorite recipes, condiments, cheese, cold cuts, sushi, ramyeon, personal care products and dog food.

My most unforgettable “The Metro Stores Moment” is whenever I’d meet and visit my cousins and relatives in the South during the Christmas season. Super memorable kasi kanya-kanya’ng lakad ang matatanda at mga bagets. (It’s super memorable because the oldies and the teenagers go their separate ways [to shop].)

We shop at the department store then go grocery shopping with our family.

Sarap i-reminisce ng mga bonding moment namin. I’m excited for the upcoming Christmas holiday again. Praying na wala ng lockdown para makapagbonding na ulit kaming lahat at The Metro Stores Alabang Town Center. (It feels great to reminisce about our bonding moments... I’m praying that there’s no more lockdown so that my family and I can finally spend time together again at The Metro Stores Alabang Town Center.)

My kwentong Metro goes all the way back to my childhood days. On Sundays when my brother and I didn’t have classes, and my mom had a day off from work, we would go to the Metro Stores in Ayala Center Cebu together. We would do our groceries for the week and visit the other departments for necessities such as clothes, bags, shoes, brassieres, toys, school supplies, furniture, appliances, home decor and more.

I also have fun memories of spending what felt like hours in the fabric department because my uncle is into making clothes, and my aunt likes having them made. I mean, what kid hasn’t played with those rolls of cloth, pretending that they were crutches, right?

Now that my mom lives far away, we don’t get to shop as a family together. But I still like going to the Metro Stores by myself. Even with online shopping, I still prefer actually going to the store and getting a feel of the things that I want to buy. For me, nothing beats shopping physically and being able to bring home your purchases immediately. Plus, the Metro Stores has everything you need. Truly, there’s something for you at the Metro.

My kwentong Metro... there’s actually a lot. I can remember when I was in college, I actually had to save my baon for like three to five months because I needed a perfect dress for my graduation. So, I got that perfect dress at The Metro Stores. And I think the brand was Maco. It was really the perfect dress that I wanted for my graduation.

Another memorable experience I had with Metro was during my wedding—this is really very memorable. In weddings, you have something new, something old, something blue, something maroon. So, I got something new and something blue here at Metro. Shoes, necklace, I got them all here at Metro.

And of course, Christmas. I got my Christmas gifts here at Metro last year and the other year because it’s so convenient. You can find everything here—gift items, souvenir items, and the littlest of fashion items, they’re all here. So, you should really go here at Metro every Christmas to do the Christmas shopping. And there’s free gift wrapping as well.

Whatever you need for any occasion, it’s all at the Metro. Why do I love shopping at Metro? What’s not to love, diba? It’s all here. And as a fashion blogger, I find it very easy to shop at Metro because I’m always on a budget. Metro is so affordable, trendy and stylish.

And its staff is very helpful. They usually help find the right sizes for me and they’re so accommodating. That’s why I love shopping here at the Metro.

In its ruby year, countless individuals, employees, friends, and families have seen their lives transpire with The Metro Stores. The brand aims to keep giving the best brand experience to customers, as it continues to innovate, modernize, provide best value offers, helping make life easy for Filipinos. (SPONSORED CONTENT)
