Minority may become ‘Company Union’

Manila, Philippines --- Malacanang assured of support of both the majority and the minority in the House of Representatives?

This scenario was unthinkable in the past Congresses but with Lakas-CMD, the only legitimate opposition party, struggling to win even just 13 of the 233 available congressional seats, President Benigno C. Aquino III may yet receive the backing of the majority and still have a "company union" in the minority.

A quick check of the on-going count of congressional election results show that at least 97 Liberal Party bets for congressman are listed in the win column.

The Nationalist People's Coalition, National Unity Party (NUP) and the Nacionalista Party, all LP allies, also won a big number of seats open during the May 13 polls.

The NPC is winning in 39 congressional districts, the NUP in 22 and the NP in 23.

Lakas-CMD, the most formidable among political parties prior to the 2010 Aquino election victory, is hoping to win in 13 congressional districts as of press time.

But among the guaranteed Lakas-CMD winners are former president and Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of Pampanga and Rep. Martin Romualdez of Leyte.

Arroyo is relaxing with a wide margin over her opponent, LP's Vivian Dabu. Now under hospital detention on plunder charges, the former chief executive did not campaign and vote in the May 13 polls.

Romualdez, currently Lakas-CMD president, ran unopposed. He has been endorsed by current Minority Leader Danilo Suarez to take his post.
