MANDALUYONG CITY, MANILA – “Suplado” is the new sexy. Take it from comedian Stanley Chi.
Chi's new book, titled “Suplado Tips”, is a compendium of tips in which he shares his thoughts on how to be suplado (literally meaning “cocky” or “standoffish”) in today's modern society.
The idea for the book came about after a simple status update Chi shared in his Facebook fan page.
“I toyed with the idea that being cocky can be a means of getting what you want – or at least a way to delude yourself that you already have everything in the first place,” the comedian said.
That eventually resulted to “Suplado Society of the Philippines”. Which led to him writing a book that he says tries to address the non-confrontational attitude of most Filipinos.
“Many people dream of sticking it to their bosses or giving someone they hate a nasty remark or two, but they often resort to doing none of the above.”
“Filipinos tend to be non-confrontational, avoiding conflicts as much as they can. Suplado Tips is the funny respite that people with a grudge have been looking for,” said Chi, who writes and illustrates the comic strip “Chopsticks” (published every Sunday on Manila Bulletin) and hosts the comedy show “Front Act” on Studio 23.
“Reading a suplado tip is like acting out a fantasy. The book gives you many scenarios where being standoffish gives you the upper hand, something which otherwise would not happen in real life,” he added.
His book has spurred video testimonials from celebrities (like Ramon Bautista(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41vAi-cNMY8)) to ordinary people who share how they found use for these suplado tips.
Chi’s passion for comedy now encompasses literature, which he considers a refreshing medium to poke fun at Filipino society. But the comedian says it's his way of reminding people to “take life easy and just enjoy a good joke”.
“Suplado Tips” is now available in National Bookstore and Fully Booked outlets nationwide.
