A mother and her three children were killed along with two others in a fire that ravaged Tondo, Manila early this morning.
Manila Fire Marshal John Joseph Jalique said the blaze started at about 2:38am in the residential area of Yuseco Street in Abad Santos and quickly spread, destroying scores of homes, CNN Philippines reports.
Four of the victims who died in the fire were identified as Odessa Conde, 36, and her 8-year-old son Kiefer, 9-year-old daughter Kiara, and 10-year-old son Yexel.
Authorities said Odessa and her children were trapped inside their burning house, which was made of light materials, according to The Manila Bulletin.
The two others who perished were 42-year-old Jean Paul Esguerra, who was disabled, and Aquilina Havana, whose body was the last to be recovered at about 8:54am, GMA News reports. Six unidentified residents were also injured in the fire.
Officials declared the fire to be out at 7:14am.
The early morning blaze destroyed at least 50 houses, affecting an estimated 100 families. Authorities are still investigating what caused the fire.
