NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines —  Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is strictly monitoring the activities of Kanlaon Volcano after DOST-PHIVOLCS gave it an Alert Level 2.

It means the volcano is in a moderate level of unrest and it can possibly release magma or magmatic eruption anytime.

That is why citizens are prohibited to enter in the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone because of the possible release of lava from the volcano.

The Civil Aviation Authority also prohibits air flight. Near the volcano, there will be an Emergency Response committee meeting for Mt. Kanlaon by the Disaster Management Program Division.

A contingency plan and evacuation center have also been prepared in case the volcano erupts.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Maranon assured that authorities are monitoring the volcano to alert residents.

Last Friday, Department of Education (Deped) suspended classes in elementary and high school in the town of La Castellana due to the smell of sulfur.

It can be recalled that last year, the said volcano erupted for more than 10 minutes and released magma. There were no reports of death.

The local government advised residents near the volcano to remain calm and follow the advice they will release to avoid disasters. — Lalaine Kanlaon | UNTV News and Rescue
