Naga village councilor arrested for shabu now faces charges

A BARANGAY official in Naga City, southern Cebu who was arrested in an anti-illegal drug operation in August this year is now facing charges in court.

Leia Alcantara, information officer of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Central Visayas, said at least three administrative cases have been filed by the Visayas Ombudsman against the 50-year-old suspect, Mainit barangay councilor Renante Chiong.

These charges include violation of Republic Act 6713, or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standard for Public Officials and Employees, Grave Misconduct pursuant to Section 50 Rule 10 of the 2017 Rules on Administrative cases in Civil Service, and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of service pursuant to Section 46, Chapter 7 of Revised Administrative Code of 1987.

Chiong was arrested on August 23, 2022 inside his house in Barangay Mainit by virtue of a search warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 17 Judge Anacleto Debalucos in Cebu City following a video showing the suspect inhaling shabu.

The agency recovered several sachets of shabu that were inside a brown envelope and hidden under folded curtains. (AYB, TPT)
