A 30-YEAR-OLD man who identified himself as an intelligence officer and squad leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Negros Occidental surrendered to authorities in Dumanjug town, southwest Cebu on Monday, June 20, 2022.

The surrenderer (real name withheld for security purposes) was the first NPA member to surrender in Cebu Province this year, police said.

Assisted by family

Lt. Col. Rolando Barraquio, chief of the 2nd Cebu Provincial Mobile Force Company, said the self-confessed NPA rebel surrendered at 5:20 p.m. Monday in Dumanjug with the assistance of his family.

“Nakatanggap kami ng information na may magsu-surrender [sa atin] sa aming patrol base sa Moalboal. After that, pinuntahan ng tropa natin sa Dumanjug at positive na may nag-surrender na NPA na active member ng NPA sa Negros Occidental,” said Barraquio in an interview Tuesday, June 21.

(We received information about a man who was about to surrender to our patrol base in Moalboal. After that, our team proceeded to Dumanjug and it turned out positive that an active member of NPA from Negros Occidental wanted to surrender.)

Convinced by relatives

Barraquio said the NPA rebel’s relatives in Dumanjug had convinced him to surrender for his own sake.

The rebel surrendered in Cebu because his family had assured him that he’s safe here.

He told the police that he had left his firearms in Negros Occidental.

Barraquio said the NPA rebel came to Cebu because he wanted to surrender in a peaceful place.

The self-confessed NPA member has been in the custody of Barraquio’s unit in Moalboal, Cebu. The government has assured him of financial and livelihood assistance, Barraquio added.

Despite government efforts to end the communist insurgency in Negros, NPA rebels are still operating in island. Negros Island comprises Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental provinces.
