Former Bayan Muna Representative Neri Colmenares tossed his name in the hat for the senatorial race on Thursday (September 23), his third attempt for a seat in the Senate.

"I will run for a Senate seat in 2022 if only to deliver the sharpest message of critique to the candidate of President Duterte," said the human rights lawyer on activist on ANC's "Rundown," confirming his bid.

"I’m not saying that the other senatorial candidates will not deliver on their job. We’re just saying that we’re going to contribute in the discourse to expose the lies of President (Rodrigo) Duterte," he added.

Colmenares, one of 9 senatorial bets the Makabayan Coalition endorsed in the 2019 elections, has yet to announce his platform, but he vowed to include salary hikes and regularization for workers, as well as genuine agricultural reform for farmers. As part of this plan, Colmenares also said that he intends to work on new laws aimed at addressing the COVID-19 epidemic in the nation.

"We will treat this pandemic as a public health emergency, not a peace and order issue that Duterte treated it," he said.

Colmenares is the third opposition candidate to announce his senatorial bid. Human rights lawyer Chel Diokno announced his bid on September 15, while Muslim women rights advocate Samira Gutoc also announced her candidacy on Wednesday.

Several netizens, including critically-acclaimed writer Jerry B. Gracio have already shown their support for the three on Twitter.
