Nigerian ex-governors accused of embezzling $674M

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria's antigraft body accuses three former governors of embezzling $674 million in the oil-rich West African nation.

A spokesman for Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said Thursday that former Ogun state governor Olugbenga Daniel, Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo state and Aliyu Akwe Doma of Nasarawa state were arrested Thursday.

Femi Babafemi said Daniel is accused of defrauding the state of $387 million. He said Alao-Akala and Doma each face $167 million and $120 million fraud allegations. All three governors are members of the ruling party.

The former governors and the party spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

Under Nigeria's federal system, states receive large shares of the nation's oil revenues that can prove tempting targets for graft.
