Non-professional sports events will remain on the shelf for now. This, as the Games and Amusement Board (GAB), the Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) released a circular that maintained that non-professional sports events cannot be given clearance.
“Considering that an effective vaccine for Covid-19 has not yet been made available, it follows that the implementation of this Joint Administrative Order (JAO) shall remain in effect, until and unless amended or revoked,” read the statement that was signed by GAB chairman Baham Mitra, PSC chairman Butch Ramirez, and DOH secretary Francisco Duque.
“Thus, GAB shall continue to adhere to the provisions of this JAO to help the government’s effort to curb the possible transmission of multiple Covid-19 variants, without compromising the welfare of our professional athletes and GAB-regulated sports associations whose livelihood largely depends on the conduct of professional sports competitions,” the statement continued.
This development means that the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), which was looking to finish its stalled Lakan Season next month, would still remain sidelined for the time being.
This circular also effectively squashes plans by the Philippine Superliga and the NCAA to hold tournaments later this year. (JNP)
