Now Showing: 2012 Calendar Of Memorable Movie Lines

MANILA, Philippines - This year has produced a bunch of Filipino movies with lines that have stood out and quoted back and forth between friends and family members. Good job, writers!

January

"A Mother's Story" (Drama)

QUOTE: "Isa pa lang mahabang paglalakbay ang pagiging ina." - Medy (Pokwang)

NOTE: The line underscores how a mother's love for her children never ends even when they have already grown up. It's an unlikely line to hear from Pokwang who is better known as comedienne than dramatic actress.

February

"ÜnOfficially Yours" (Love Story)

QUOTE: "Akala mo kung sinong malaman, sabaw lang naman!" - Cess (Angel Locsin)

NOTE: "Sabaw" or "broth" in English is turned into a colloquial term for a guy who's got the looks and nothing else going for him. Many of the scenes in this film were shot inside the Manila Bulletin building, too.

March

"My Kontrabida Girl" (Comedy)

QUOTE: "I want to be your partner: in Santa Cruzan, in prom, in a dance number... but most of all, I want to be your partner in life... I want to be your leading man." - Chris (Aljur Abrenica)

NOTE: This "kilig" line had ladies sighing inside the theatres while their men beat their brains dead trying to think of an even better line they could use later.

April

"Moron 5 and the Crying Lady" (Comedy)

QUOTE: "Mula nung dumating tayo dito, 'di pa ako jumejebs. Hangga't nandito tayo sa kulungan, hindi ko ilalabas 'to!" - Aristotle (Marvin Agustin)

NOTE: Was that a threat or a promise? Whatever, it was certainly crass but a potent punchline nonetheless.

May

"Born To Love You" (Love Story)

QUOTE: "I love you 4... forever." - Joey (Angeline Quinto)

NOTE: Starring Angeline Quinto in her very first movie, the line was delivered to Coco Martin in such an off-the-mark manner that it proved itself unforgettable.

June

"Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme" (Comedy)

QUOTE: "I'm sooooo excoiiiteeeddd!!!" - Dora (Eugene Domingo)

NOTE: Delivered in the actress's inimitable style, the extended "e"'s and "d"'s in the line is no typo error but simply tries to capture the emphasis and exaggeration that had moviegoers in stitches.

July

"The Healing" (Horror)

QUOTE: "Mangyayari ang mangyayari." - Manang Elsa (Daria Ramirez)

NOTE: Talk about being vague. However, the line works in that moviegoers are warned of what's to come long before the characters in the film have a clue of how bad it is.

August

"The Reunion" (Teen Flick)

QUOTE: "Ang buhay kasi mga anak, isang malaking 'connect the dots."' - Nena (Gina Pareño)

NOTE: The line is profundity simplified. Gina delivers the line in such motherly fashion that one gets the message without feeling lectured on.

September

"The Mistress" (Drama)

QUOTE: "Layuan mo ang asawa ko. Tagalog 'yan para maintindihan mo." - Regina (Hilda Koronel)

NOTE: The line is a succinct stab on mistresses who are mostly regarded by wives as too dumb to even understand anything outside the vernacular. That one line implies that mistresses are stupid and obstinate.

October

"A Secret Affair" (Drama)

QUOTE: "Kaya kabit ang tawag sa kanila kasi daig pa nila ang epoxy kung kumabit, kaya kerida kasi mga kiri, kaya mistress kasi nakaka-stress." - Ellen (Jaclyn Jose)

NOTE: A lesson in etymology. Well, sort of.

November

"D' Kilabots Pogi Brothers Weh?!" (Comedy)

QUOTE: "Weh! 'Di nga?" - Lulu (Solenn Heussaff)

NOTE: For quite a time now, "Weh" is being used as the Pinoy expression for disbelief. The nearest equivalent in English are "Really?" and maybe even "Whoa."

December

"Himala" (Drama)

QUOTE: "Walang himala!" - Elsa (Nora Aunor)

NOTE: If you say so.
