NPA squad leader travels to Cebu from Negros to surrender

A 30-YEAR-OLD member of the New People’s Army (NPA) operating in Negros Occidental surrendered to authorities in Cebu Monday, June 20, 2022.

The surrenderer (real name withheld for security purposes) was identified as an intelligence officer and squad leader of the NPA. He is the first NPA member to surrender in Cebu province this year.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Barraquio, chief of 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, said the NPA rebel surrendered around 5:20 p.m. Monday, June 20, in Dumanjug, Cebu with the assistance of his family.

“Nakatanggap kami ng information na may magsu-surrender [sa atin] sa aming patrol base sa Moalboal. After that, pinuntahan ng tropa natin sa Dumanjug at positive na may nag-surrender na NPA na active member ng NPA sa Negros Occidental,” said Barraquio in an interview Tuesday, June 21.

(We received information about a surrenderer in a patrol base in Moalboal. Our task force proceeded to Dumanjug and it was confirmed that an NPA member Negros Occidental has surrendered.)

Barraquio said the surrenderer has relatives in Dumanjug, Cebu who convinced him to yield for his own benefit.

Barraquio added that the NPA member surrendered in Cebu because his family can guarantee his safety, adding that he left his firearms in Negros Occidental.

“Alam naman natin na gusto nilang magsurrender sa peaceful na lugar kaya pumunta sila sa Cebu,” he said.

(He came to Cebu because he wants to surrender in a peaceful place.)

“Makikita naman sa mukha ng tao ma’am. Talagang willing siya magsurrender,” Barraquio added.

(It’s obvious on the person’s face that he was very willing to surrender.)

The NPA member has now been in the custody of the 2nd Maneuver Platoon of the Provincial Mobile Force Company-Cebu Provincial Police Office based in Moalboal, Cebu.

The government has assured him of financial and livelihood assistance.
