Off-duty cop nabs thief in Talisay

A POLICEMAN who was off-duty caught a thief who stole cash from a vendor on corner Saint Joseph Church in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City Thursday, November 10, 2022.

The suspect was identified as Jerome Pedriña, 19, of Sitio Common, Bacayan Talamban, Cebu City. He was nabbed at 12:15 p.m. Thursday after stealing money from Jenalyn Gamboa Go-od, 30, a vegetable vendor and resident of Barangay Tabunok.

Police Staff Sergeant Organe Basillote Lungtad, of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (Swat) of the Naga City Police Station, was in the area when he saw the suspect running away from Go-od.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Randy Caballes, chief of the Talisay City Police Station, told Superbalita Cebu that Pedriña’s modus is to enter a store and pretend as a customer.

The police said that during Thursday’s incident, Go-od left her vending area and upon return, she saw the suspect taking away her money.

The suspect ran away after seeing Go-od, carrying with him P26,000 worth of cash.

Go-od ran after Pedriña, and Lungtad, who was just passing by, noticed the commotion. He ran after the suspect and caught him.

Recovered from Pedriña was the P26,000 money.

In an interview with Superbalita Cebu, Lungtad said he was off-duty Thursday and was about to go home to Naga when he noticed the commotion. He saw the suspect and the victim running.

“Paglingi nako kay naa nangayo’g tabang, dali ko mibalik sa agi. Ako gisugat ang suspek, napusasan, nakuha ang kwarta kinawat,” said Lungtad.

Police Colonel Junnel Caadlawon, chief of the Naga City Police Station, said what Pedriña had shown is a heroic act.

He said this would show that the police are ready to respond to and protect the people from criminals.

"Wala siyay duha-duha si PSSG. Lungtad, sa pagserbisyo bisag off-duty, bisan pa laing hurisdiksyon kay sila sa kapulisan nanalipod sa katawhan (Lungtad did not hesitate to serve despite the fact that he was off-duty and in another jurisdiction)," said Caadlawon. (GPL/LMY)
