(UPDATED) ONE person was confirmed dead, while two others were in critical condition after an old bridge in Loay, Bohol collapsed Wednesday afternoon, April 27.

Police Captain Geronimo Conaco said around 10 vehicles fell after the Clarin Bridge collapsed around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Eight people were already rescued, but several others were believed to have been trapped inside their vehicles.

In a Facebook post, Bohol Governor Art Yap said he instructed the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, emergency rescue divers of Tarsier 117 and Bohol Police Provincial Office to ensure the swift rescue and assistance to the victims.

He said the Tagbilaran City Government and divers from Panglao have also been helping in the search and rescue operations.

He added that according to engineer Magiting Cruz of the Department of Public Works and Highways Third District Office, the bridge collapsed possibly because it was only intended for flowing traffic but what happened Wednesday afternoon was there were a lot of cargo vehicles on it.

“The bridge could not take the weight, that’s the reason why it collapsed,” said Yap in a Facebook video.

“Hangyuon ko ang tanan nga iampo ang mga possible victims, ang ilang mga pamilya and most of all the search and rescue operators who are in the area. Let us pray for all of them,” he added. (BBT/LMY)
