Olympics: Nesthy Petecio opens medal bid with unanimous decision win

Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio is off to a rousing start in the Tokyo Olympics after scoring a unanimous decision win over Sakobi Matshu Marcelat of Congo in the Round of 32 of the women's featherweight division at the Kokugikan Arena on Saturday (July 24).  

Four of the judges scored the bout to Petecio's favor for a 30-27 shut-out, as the other judge gave out a close score of 29-28.  

Petecio displayed grit and composure in all three rounds of action to overcome the reach advantage of Sakobi Matshu, giving the Philippines its first triumphant moment in the ring.  

The 2019 AIBA Women's Boxing Championship featherweight gold medalist will advance to the Round of 16 return where she will square off against the top-seeded featherweight fighter in Lin Yu-Ting of Chinese Taipei on Monday (July 26).
