A 25-YEAR-OLD native of Lapu-Lapu City will attempt to swim around Olango Island in Lapu-Lapu City on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021.

Open water swimmer Cleevan Alegres told Superbalita Cebu that his swim around Olango will serve as preparation for his circumnavigation of Mactan Island on April 24.

Alegres said he plans to initiate his swim around Olango Island around late Sunday afternoon after he suffered painful sunburns during his previous practice swims.

He said he estimates that he will be able to cover around 20 kilometers in at least eight hours.

As he conducts his swim around Olango Island, three stand-up paddlers from Island Buzz Philippines will be accompanying him.

The stand-up paddlers will assist Alegres with what he needs for his swim, including hydration and food if he feels hungry.

Aside from the stand-up paddlers, around 11 photographers will document Alegres’ attempt to swim around Olango Island.

Alegres’ swim around Olango Island will serve as the first phase in a series of attempts to circumnavigate Mactan Island’s coastal waters.

The open water swimmer’s attempt will be made as the City is set to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan, which coincides with the 500th anniversary of the voyage of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

To prepare for his attempt, Alegres had to practice swimming at different hours so he could familiarize himself with the temperature and get acclimatized during the evening.

Alegres said his swim around the island aims to raise awareness on taking care of the ocean. (REV / JKV)
