Original Star Wars writer returns for new trilogy

A writer who penned parts of the original "Star Wars" trilogy is returning for another stint, this time to write parts of a new trilogy.

Lawrence Kasdan will team up with Simon Kinberg and may write either Episode 8 or 9 of the film franchise recently acquired by Disney, The Verge reported.

"Kasdan's already got some serious credentials under his belt: he previously co-wrote 'The Empire Strikes Back,' 'Return of the Jedi,' and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark.' Kasdan's counterpart Kinberg has written titles including 'X-Men: The Last Stand,' 'Sherlock Holmes,' and 'Jumper,'" it said. Plotting the new trilogy

However, a separate report on The Hollywood Reporter said their exact division of responsibilities is yet to be determined, though they may also produce the films along with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

THR cited sources who said Kasdan and Kinberg had closed deals to write installments of the new trilogy.

On the other hand, it said Oscar winner Michael Arndt, who worked on "Toy Story 3" and "Little Miss Sunshine," is writing the script for Episode VII.

Episodes VII to IX will be the first "Star Wars" trilogy for Lucasfilms under Disney's ownership.

But THR said Episode VII will also be the first "Star Wars" film to be made without the hands-on input of creator George Lucas.

'War veteran' returns

THR said Kasdan is a Lucasfilm and Star Wars vet, having co-written "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 and "Return of the Jedi" in 1983.

On the other hand, Kinberg is co-writing the upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and was a producer on "X-Men: First Class."

He is also producing "Cinderella" for Disney. — TJD, GMA News
