On Sunday, movie fans from around the world will watch to see which of Hollywood’s biggest stars will go home with a coveted Oscar.

The 92nd Academy Awards have already come under significant criticism, from Greta Gerwig being snubbed from the Oscar nominations to a general lack of diversity in the films up for contention.

One thing’s for sure, no matter what the results turn out to be on Sunday night, there will always be critics.

But what do you want to see happen at the 2020 Academy Awards? Share your predictions in the polls below.

The category for the best actor in a leading role is full of heavy-hitters this year. Joaquin Phoenix swept the awards leading up to the Oscars for his portrayal of the the lead character in Joker. Since its release, the film has received mixed reviews, with some claiming that the movie could “inspire” dangerous behaviour.

Should Phoenix take home the big award? Or is another Hollywood star, like Leonardo DiCaprio, or first-time nominee Jonathan Pryce more deserving?

Although many feel that women have been underrepresented at the Oscars, some very seasoned and inspiring ladies are in contention to win for best actress in a leading role.

Renee Zellweger won the Golden Globe for her role in Judy, a film that didn’t land many significant nominations in the Academy Awards this year, while Charlize Theron’s depiction of Megyn Kelly in Bombshell is spot-on. Many eyes will also be on Saoise Ronan to see if she can bring home the award for Little Women and if she’ll reference the film’s lack-of nomination in the Directing category.

With many ensemble casts in films this year, some of your favourite performances are likely in the supporting category, rather than lead.

The Irishman has the best chance of being recognized in this category, with both Al Pacino and Joe Pesci competing for the award. Brad Pitt likely remains the favourite to win, after coming out on top at the Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards.

Scarlett Johansson is in contention for both lead and supporting actress at the Academy Awards this year for her work in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, respectively. She is only the 12th person to be in contention for two acting awards in the same year.

The award for best director is probably the most contentious category this year. Notably missing are any female nominees.

Sam Mendes’ 1917 is unique, due to the single-shot technique used in the film, while Martin Scorsese’s expert filmmaking for The Irishman shouldn’t be overlooked. Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite has also received a lot of attention, particularly after winning the Palme d’Or in Cannes. But can the Korean filmmaking beat out the competition? We’ll see on Sunday.
