CALOOCAN CITY, Philippines — Opposition senators have begun their campaign trail on the streets of Caloocan City to reach out to the public and to know the issues which they want the future leaders to address.
They decided to do away with the traditional method of campaigning and conventional speeches.
“Nag-move on na ang taumbayan sa partido, sa kulay. Ang isyu nila, sino ang magbibigay pansin sa tao sa pangangailangan nila,” Senator Bam Aquino said of the people’s sentiments.
Joining Aquino in the opposition senatorial slate are Magdalo Party list Rep. Gary Alejano; Former Deputy Speaker Congressman Erin Tañada; Election Lawyer Romy Macalintal; Former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay; Former member of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission Samira Gutoc; and former DILG Secretary Mar Roxas.
Roxas was not able to join the first day of campaign because he preferred to go to Capiz as he traditionally does.
Other members denied the issue of disunity in the group with the absence of Roxas.
Roxas’ campaign manager Rep. Egay Erice said it was part of their political strategy.
“He will be there tomorrow. Mangyayari talaga na hindi nakakasama. That’s how it is,” explained Senator Kiko Pangilinan.
The group chose Caloocan City because it has recorded the highest number of victims of extrajudicial killings.
They claim that the opposition coalition in the 2019 election will be the referendum of the Duterte administration.
“Maraming victims ng war on drugs sa Camanava area – 157. Tuloy tuloy parin ang patayan,” noted Atty. Chel Diokno, one of the eight senatorial hopefuls.
The opposition group’s platform focuses on educational reform, security, justice system, women’s and senior citizens’ rights as well as farmers’ rights, economic progress and the country’s sovereign rights.
The group will have their grand launch on Wednesday (February 13) in Naga City. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Grace Casin)
