MORE than 4,000 scholars of the Cebu City Government received their cash allowances Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The City Government released a total of P6.7 million worth of allowances that can be used by the students for their school supplies, transportation expenses, and boarding house rentals.

City Treasurer Mare Vae Reyes told SunStar Cebu that 4,136 scholars are currently studying at the University of Cebu and received financial assistance from the City.

Reyes also explained that only students residing in the city’s upland barangays are eligible to receive the P5,000 transportation and boarding allowance, while those living in the lowland barangays will receive only P1,000 for school supplies.

The other city scholars who are studying in different schools and universities will also receive their allowance once the list is finalized by the city’s scholarship office, she said.

Reyes added that the allowances are only given to the beneficiaries per semester.

In a previous interview, then vice mayor Donaldo Hontiveros said the city government had allocated P50 million for its scholarship program that caters to around 6,000 students.

Aside from the allowances, the scholars are entitled to receive P10,000 per semester from the City and their schools will also provide them with discounts as a counterpart to the City’s program.

As of this school year, the City Government has partnered with 23 private and public institutions for the scholarship program.
