Over 83K set to receive P5K cash aid from Lapu-Lapu City

THE Lapu-Lapu City government has already come up with a list of beneficiaries who are qualified to receive the P5,000 financial assistance from the city.

A total of 83,941 persons were listed as beneficiaries of the program during the verification process conducted by the barangay officials and City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) earlier.

For this, a total of P419,705,000 funding is needed by the City so that no beneficiaries will be left out in the cash distribution.

However, the City has an available fund of only P236 million, which is short of P183,705,000 to come up with the amount.

The city’s available fund should have been P302 million after the city council added P66 million to it, the first budget that they had approved, but Mayor Junard Chan vetoed it, saying the move was illegal.

The mayor said he would personally look for the lacking amount so that all the beneficiaries can receive the P5,000 cash aid.

“We already have P236 million from the city; therefore, we only lack P183,705,000. This P183 million, I will look for ways to come up with this,” according to the mayor in his social media post.

Chan also encouraged those who have not been listed yet to inform them so they would be included in the list.

Earlier, the P5,000 financial assistance became controversial when the city councilors who are allies of Lapu-Lapu City Rep. Paz Radaza questioned the legality of the program and where to get money for it.

The opposition wanted to channel the funds to the barangay level, but the mayor chose the CSWDO instead, saying the barangay captains have not even conducted an inventory on the financial assistance given by the city. (REV, TPT)
