UP TO P260,000 worth of firecrackers was seized by personnel of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) before the new year began, police officials said on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.

Lt. Col. Wilbert Parilla, CCPO’s deputy director for operation, said their operations also helped in minimizing firecracker-related injuries in the city.

Parilla said based on the Department of Health records, only two people from Cebu City were hurt due to firecracker-related incidents.

Parilla said their constant operations that also involved barangay officials, to convince residents not to use firecrackers during the Christmas and New Year revelry proved to be effective.

The rainy weather that occurred during the holidays and the impact of Typhoon Odette to the public also helped in discouraging the use of firecrackers, Parilla added.

Aside from the use of firecrackers, local police also didn’t receive reports concerning any uniformed personnel or any person using their firearms to greet the New Year.
