MANILA, Philippines – Senator Sonny Angara wants to double the pay of public school teachers, saying that is what they deserve.

The reelectionist senator filed Senate Bill 135 which seeks to adjust teachers’ salary from salary grade 11 to 19.

Under the measure, the current teachers’ pay of P20,179 will be raised to P42,099.

Angara believes that teachers, who also have families to support, would no longer be compelled to leave the classroom and look for other jobs should the measure be granted.

Likewise, the senator expects that such a move would improve the quality of teaching and the overall education system in the country.

Angara emphasized that teachers are also public servants who deserve a reasonable compensation. – Marje Pelayo
