Pacion loses belt to Brooks in ONE 164

THE Philippines lost its last champion in the ONE Championship after Jarred Brooks dethroned ONE strawweight king Joshua Pacio by unanimous decision last Saturday night, Dec. 3, 2022, in front of a jam-packed crowd in ONE 164 - Pacio vs. Brooks at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Brooks immediately went to work and took Pacio down to the canvas and did some damage with his vicious ground-and-pound.

Pacio did a better job in defending Brooks’ takedowns in the second and third rounds.

Brooks once again took Pacio down in the fourth round and attempted to submit him with a rear-naked choke to no avail.

Brooks then finally took Pacio down in the fifth round for another dominant round and stole the belt from the Pinoy champion.

Pacio suffered his first defeat in three years and dropped to 20-4, while Brooks won his fourth straight fight in ONE Championship and improved to 20-2.

On the other hand, former ONE heavyweight champion Brandon Vera (16-10) hung up his gloves after suffering a first-round technical knockout in the hands of Iranian Amir Aliakbari (12-3).

Aliakbari pounded Vera with some heavy punches on the ground that forced the referee to end the night at the 3:37 mark of the opening stanza.

The 45-year-old Vera announced after the fight that it was his last MMA fight.

Another former world champion, Geje Eustaquio, also suffered a loss. Eustaquio (14-9) was knocked out by Chinese Hu Rong (10-4) at the 4:43 mark with a vicious overhand right.

Team Lakay’s Jeremy Pacatiw and Jhanlo Mark Sangiao, in the meantime, walked away with wins.

Pacatiw (12-5) submitted Burmese striker Thial Thang (3-2) with a triangle choke in the second round.

Sangiao (5-0) remained undefeated with a first-round rear-naked choke win over fellow Pinoy Anacleto Lauron (1-1)

Drex Zamboanga (14-5) continued his unbeaten run in ONE Championship with a unanimous decision win over ONE Warrior Series Philippines winner Adonis Sevilleno (2-3).

Chinese warrior Meng Bo (20-6) scored a first-round technical knockout of Team Lakay’s Jenelyn Olsim (6-4).

In other fights, Superlek Kiatmoo9 (131-29-4) walked away with a split decision over fellow Thai veteran Panpayak Jitmuangnon (248-42-3) in a Muay Thai fight, Russian Tagir Khalilov (28-9-2) knocked out Thai Chorfah Tor.Sangtiennoi (100-43-8) in the opening round of a Muay Thai bout and Spanish Lara Fernandez (41-14-3) walked away with a split decision over Thai Dangkongfah Banchamek (125-19-8).
