THE Philippines’ chances of advancing to 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup are slim to none after suffering a 4-0 beatdown in the hands of Palestine on June 13 at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The Palestinians were relentless in their attack and finally found the back of the net in the 31st minute from a header by forward Saleh Chihadeh from a cross pass by Musab Al-Battat.

Palestine doubled the lead with another header in the 42nd minute, compliments of forward Tamer Seyam from a cross by Mamoud Abu Warda.

Mohammed Yameen hit the back of the net in the 55th minute, while Abu Warda finished the Azkals off with a goal in the 72nd minute.

The Azkals finished second place in Group B with four points behind Palestine, who qualified for the tournament next year in China.

The Philippines needs to be one of the five best second placers to get a spot in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. The Philippines is currently the fourth best second placer behind Thailand, India and Kyrgyzstan, which all have six points and still a match remaining.

For the Philippines to advance, either Malaysia and Indonesia need to lose their match.

Malaysia was up against winless Bangladesh at 9 p.m. last night, while Indonesia is playing against Nepal today, June 15.
