Paras, Ravena kids are Jr. NBA finalists

MANDALUYONG CITY, METRO MANILA – Scions of former PBA superstars Benjie Paras and Bong Ravena are among 50 kids looking to become part of this year's Junior NBA Philippines squad.

Kobe Lorenzo Paras of La Salle Greenhills and Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III of Ateneo were chosen along with eight other young ballers after the Junior NBA Manila Regional Selection Camp held March 26 at Xavier Gym in Greenhills.

The other finalists from NCR are: Bouyer Airam Aseron and Lorenzo Fernando Navarro, San Sebastian College; Jarrell Lim, Xavier School; Aleck Jon A. Melecio and Alfred Sajulga, De La Salle-Zobel; Chino Manuel Mosqueda, San Beda College; Tsaddy John Tabaldo, La Salle Green Hills and Justine Oliver Serrano, Malayan High School of Science (Mapua).

Paras and Ravena will join 48 more kids in the National Training Camp at the La Salle Green Hills Gym from April 9 to 10 and at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall on April 11.

Ten finalists each were also chosen from training camps held in Bacolod, Cebu and Laguna. Ten more kids from the Alaska Power Camp will make up the final cast of 50 finalists.

Finalists were determined by their total scores in five skills stations. They were  also given vitals checks, tests of speed, stamina, flexibility and vertical leaping ability. Coaches chose the final 10 participants from each region from their performances in the final scrimmages.

The three-day camp is the high point of the 2011 Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Alaska and joined by kids 10 to 14 years old.

At the end of the camp, ten participants will be chosen to become part of the Junior NBA Philippines All Stars Team that will be get NBA-style training from former player A.C. Green of the Los Angeles Lakers and US Junior NBA Coach Frank Lopez.

The team will also  be rewarded with a courtside view of a live NBA game and the chance to play a counterpart Junior NBA selection out of the country.
