JHALEEL Payao showed a ton of grit and heart but failed in his campaign in South Africa after getting stopped in the 12th round by local hero Thato Bonokoane in a World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental super bantamweight title fight on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the Steve Tshwete Banquet Hall in Middleburg, Mpumalanga.

Payao was aggressive early on and very effective with his punch combinations forcing Bonokoane to defend. Bonokoane occasionally landed a counter punch whenever Payao missed his target.

The 28-year-old Payao suffered a huge cut above his left eye after an accidental clash of heads in the second round.

Bonokoane sensed that he was behind on the scorecards and started to press on the gas and throw some combinations in the fifth round.

Payao and Bonokoane exchanged some heavy blows in the next few rounds of a very rugged fight.

In the eighth round, Payao was deducted a point for a headbutt, which could have been very crucial if the fight went the distance.

Bonokoane controlled the fight in the eighth round and dropped Payao with a counter right in the 10th.

The 31-year-old Bonokoane was very aggressive to start the 12th but Payao fought back even though he still looked hurt and gassed out.

Bonokoane was very confident in the 12th round and lowered his hands and occasionally threw whipping jabs. As Payao was coming in, Bonokoane connected with a counter left hook that dropped the visiting Filipino near the ropes.

The referee counted Payao but immediately waved the fight off at the 1:52 mark of the final round.

“Payao did his best even though he had a huge cut. I even thought the doctors would stop the fight. Anyway, that’s boxing. Our next move is we will ask the promoter for a rematch. They said yes. The fight will be in October,” Payao’s coach Jingjing Tepora told SunStar Cebu.

Bonokoane successfully defended his title and improved to 13-5-3 with nine knockouts, while Payao dropped to 17-2 with nine knockouts.
