The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will also be doing its part to help elevate women’s basketball in the country after league commissioner Willie Marcial disclosed plans of putting up a women’s 3x3 tournament.
Marcial said that helping women’s basketball was already high on his priority list the moment he assumed the leadership role of the league back in 2018.
"Unang pasok ko sa PBA yun talaga ang gusto ko, mag-karoon ng mga babae na makakapag-basketbal kahit sa 3x3 (When I became commissioner of the PBA, that’s what I have always wanted, for women to have a basketball league of their own, even if it was just 3x3)," Marcial was quoted as saying on the league’s website.
Plans for the 3x3 women’s competition are already being hashed out while the league tries to first get the men’s 3x3 tournament off the ground. It was supposed to get underway not long after the 45th season got underway but the COVID-19 pandemic placed it on the backburner.
The league is hopeful that the 3x3 meet, which is being overseen by committee chairman Richard Bachmann, will take off next year. Marcial said that as soon as that happens, the 3x3 women’s tournament will soon follow.
"Natigil lang ng kaunti. Pero yun pa rin ang gusto kong mangyari na papa-approve ko sa PBA Board (It just got stalled but it is still what I want to happen. I just have to have it approved by the PBA Board)," Marcial added.
Board chairman Ricky Vargas has already said he is amenable to having the tournament.
"Maganda yan. Personally I agree with that. We should bring in 3x3 women," said Vargas.
The profile of women’s basketball is already on the rise with the Women’s National Basketball League recently being given professional status by the Games and Amusement Board. (JNP)
