The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) announced Wednesday its plan to release the names of barangay officials linked to illegal drugs trade prior to the conduct of the May 14 elections.
PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino confirmed to have received a “go signal” from President Rodrigo Duterte to reveal the names in the narco-list.
At present, 211 barangay officials being linked to illegal drugs are included in PDEA’s validated list. He said the original list had 293 in total though some of those names were either deceased or arrested.
Aquino will recommend to the Interior and Local Government Officer In Charge Eduardo Año to issue guidelines on the publication of the narco-list.
Aside from the 211 barangay officials, PDEA already identified 93 congressmen, vice mayor and mayors among other high-ranking officials who are involved in illegal drugs trade.
“Kaya nga dumarami mga drug laboratories natin. Why? Kasi ibang barangay officials saka mga mayor sinasadya nilang itayo mga drug lab diyan,” Aquino said.
(That is why there is an increase in drug laboratories. Why? Because barangay officials and mayors deliberately put up these drug labs.)
PDEA reiterated its call on voters not to take the side of candidates on the drugs watchlist.
“Kami naman sa law enforcement agency, paano namin ma-clear ang isang barangay kung addict ang isang barangay captain? Kung ang kanyang mga kagawad ay pusher at lahat ng mga ano ay protektor,” Aquino lamented.
(For us in the law enforcement agency, how are we supposed to clear a barangay when its captain is an addict himself and his councilors are pushers.)
Aquino assured that PDEA is ready to face repercussions once the narco-list is published. — Mon Jocson | UNTV News & Rescue
