MANILA, Philippines — Almost two million or 1.7% is expected to add in the Philippines population next year from its current number of 104.5M.

According to the Commission on Population (PopCom), 62% of this belongs to the working group or the ages of 15 to 62 years old.

PopCom admitted that this number poses a challenge to the government as far as providing jobs is concerned, especially now that close to 50% of women are jobless.

Dir. Dr. Juan Antonio Perez III.

To date, around seven million of the Philippine population are senior citizens and this number is estimated to double in 12 years.

PopCom said that health services and pension programs should be improved for the benefit of these elders.

“May mga sakit tayo katulad ng Alzeimer, mga nai-stroke na kailangan araw-araw may nagaalalay sayo,” said the director.

PopCom also noticed the increasing year of life expectancy.

In the 1960s, life expectancy is 65 years.

At present, life expectancy for women is 72 years and 67 years for men.

According to PopCom, vices and diseases among men are among the reasons for shorter lives of males than females.

Around 40M of the Philippine population are living in the mega-region composed of Central Luzon, Metro Manila and Calabarzon.

Of the three, Calabarzon records higher population with the presence of more job opportunities in the region.

— Rey Pelayo | UNTV News & Rescue
