Philippines celebrates Pride 2022

The Filipino LGBTQ community and its allies celebrated Pride Month with extra exuberance this year after two years of having to hold Pride events online during COVID-19 lockdowns.

- A lot of us our pushed back into our closets because we have to go back to the houses of our parents. For example. And since a lot of us were out, we weren't accepted by our family, so a lot of us were left in unsafe spaces.

- The community is very excited. We've been waiting for this for two years, and so, you can expect it's going to be very colorful, yes.

- And there are a lot of anti-discrimination ordinances that were passed in the previous years in big cities, including Manila the capital of our country, in Quezon City, Pasig City, even in Ilo Ilo city, they amended the ordinance to include SOGIE based discrimination.

So there are these small progress in terms of the legislation that their local ordinances, but as to international law, there is still no national law against anti-discrimination and still wanting to be passed here in the Philippines. So our hope is that the anti-discrimination bill be passed like in terms of legislation. We want to be able to live a life that's free from fear of discrimination or violence. It's the bare minimum, but it's still something that they're fighting for that is they here in the country.
