President Rodrigo Duterte’s long-term aide Senator Bong Go has officially declined the ruling party's support to be their standard bearer in the 2022 elections alongside the president.
In a letter addressed to Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Laban ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) president, Go said he is not interested in running for president, but he is truly honored by the party's national executive committee's (NEC) trust and confidence.
“As much as I wish to respond to the clamor of many of our partymates, I most respectfully decline the said endorsement. As I have said many times before, I am not interested in the presidency,” Go wrote in a letter made public on Monday (August 30).
Go expressed hope that whoever succeeds Duterte would continue the president’s work in the battle against crime, corruption, and illicit narcotics.
“Importante na may katimbang si Pangulong Duterte na kayang ipagpatuloy ang mga nagawa niya. Iyan ang continuity na sinasabi ko. Pero please lang, huwag lang ako,” he said.
(Translation: It is important that President Duterte has an equal who can continue what he has done. That is the continuity that I’m saying. Just please, not me.)
Meanwhile, Cusi said he wished that Go would reconsider since they were “convinced” they made the right choice in nominating Go for they “trust and believe in his leadership qualities.”
Go earlier stated that if Duterte was his running partner, he would consider running for president.
Duterte is barred from seeking re-election by the constitution, but his opponents believe he intends to keep power.
