Miss Universe Spain recently gave a shoutout to the Philippines, harking back to her time living in the country and the positive influence it had on her.

Beauty queen Alicia Faubel also underscored the close links between the Spanish and Filipino cultures, owing to their colonial history.

Filipinos are well known for their hospitality and being very appreciative and bubbly personalities, and I'm very grateful that I got inspired and I absorbed the best out of it.Alicia Faubel, Miss Universe Spain 2022

In a video posted by the Miss Universe organization's social media, 25-year-old Faubel said:

"Hi guys. In case you still didn't know, I lived in the Philippines for three years where I started acting and I was doing modeling. I felt very close in the Philippines and I learned so much living in the Philippines, especially being Spanish. The Philippines was colonized by the Spanish [for] over three hundred years, then the Japanese came over and then the Americans came over.

If you ever have the pleasure of visiting the Philippines you will realize that a lot of the culture and the substance that there is in the country has a lot of the influence of the Spanish, such as the words. For example, in Spanish we say 'comostas', in Tagalog they say 'kumusta ka'. And a lot of the words like kubyertos, platitos, kutsara, mariposa, it's the same in Spanish. And a lot of the dishes: we've got adobo, we've got leche flan and many other things.

Living in the Philippine for 3 years definitely made a lot in my personality because Filipinos are well known for their hospitality and being very appreciative and bubbly personalities and I'm very grateful that I got inspired and I absorbed the best out of it and I'm actually really looking forward to go there representing Miss Universe Spain 2022."

The Philippines' own Miss Universe PH 2022, Celeste Cortesi, will represent the country at the international pageant, which was recently pushed to 2023 to avoid a potential clash of dates with the FIFA World Cup in November and December.

Miss Universe 2022 will be held at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States on January 14, 2023.
