THE Phoenix Super LPG got their season off to a victorious start as they routed the Meralco Bolts, 116-98, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Monday night, October 12, 2020, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena & Cultural Center in Pampanga.
Prolific wingman Matthew Wright put on a fiery shooting display as he finished with 36 points to help Phoenix start its season on a winning note. Wright scored 12 points in a pivotal third period run that saw the Fuel Masters erect leads that went as high as 29 points.
Already up by 12 at halftime 53-41, Wright scored eight straight points before Jason Perkins and Justin Chua got in on the scoring parade to put Phoenix up by a whopping 25 points, 75-50.. Later in the period, bench cogs RR Garcia, RJ Jazul and Dave Marcelo all hit triples to put Phoenix up, 92-63, heading to the last 12 minutes of action.
Perkins and Chua added 17 points apiece while Garcia added 14 off the bench.
Meralco was led by veteran forward Reynel Hugnatan, who had 16 points. The Bolts’ starters failed to provide any spark as they combined to score just 40 points.
