MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed that a doctor from the PNP General Hospital died on May 30 due to suffocation after being sprayed with disinfectant during decontamination.

PNP Spokesperson Police BGen. Bernard Banac identified the victim as Police Captain Casey Gutierrez.

Gutierrez was among police frontliners monitoring coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients in a makeshift quarantine facility at Philippines Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Reports said Gutierrez was going through decontamination after attending to some patients when he complained of difficulty breathing.

He was rushed to the PNP General Hospital and later on transferred to the Philippine Lung Center due to the severity of his condition.

After five days of confinement, the doctor passed away.

Initial investigation revealed that Gutierrez was exposed to a strong amount of sodium hypochlorite. MNP (with details from Lea Ylagan)
