AS PHENOMENAL as Roger Ray Pogoy was on offense, TNT head coach Bong Ravena said he was just as efficient on the defensive side of the ball, which helped greatly in their 104-83 victory over the Alaska Aces in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020.

The victory placed the Tropang Giga in the semifinals where they will go up against the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, which pulled off an exciting 89-88 victory over the Magnolia Hotshots, also on Saturday night.

Pogoy, who hails from Talisay City, found his groove once against the very same Aces squad that he torched for a career-high 45 points at the start of the PBA “bubble.” On Saturday, the University of Cebu high school product exploded for 34 points, highlighted by six makes from beyond the arc.

However, Ravena took note of the Cebuano’s work on the defensive end where he racked up two steals.

“It’s great that RR’s game showed up tonight not only on offense. But he really, really played hard defense against Alaska. We hope that he will continue these contributions in the coming games,” shared Ravena after the game.

Ravena added that they really buckled down on defense after trailing by as much as 11 in the second quarter. That defensive intensity carried over to the third canto, which helped them outclass Alaska during that stretch, 33-15, to open up a huge 18-point margin, 84-66.

“We managed to tie the game pero we started focusing on our defense. We made stops and we had that run. Momentum-wise, it really changed the complexion of the game,” said Ravena. (JNP)
