Police are searching for a lorry driver who deliberately rammed his vehicle into a family home before fleeing the scene.

Police Scotland have launched an investigation into the incident which took place before midnight on Monday at the house on Lancaster Crescent in East Kilbride.

Residents were quickly evacuated from the destroyed building, the force said.

One shocked eyewitness said the truck "hit the house, reversed and then hit it again" before "fleeing up the street".

Another nearby neighbour said: “We stay the street behind it and there’s a lot of noise just now banging and drilling - sounds like they’re maybe trying to stabilise the foundations to get the family’s things out.”

A third added: “I heard it last night - this street it's quite quiet anyway. I heard a loud bang and I heard her (the woman who lives in the house) shouting.”

The heavy goods vehicle thought to be involved in the incident was found abandoned in a nearby supermarket car park.

Police have since cordoned it off and parked a patrol car next to it.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "An investigation is underway after a lorry was deliberately driven into a house in Lancaster Crescent on Monday 6 September 2021.

“Police were notified around 11.25pm. No one was injured in the incident. The building has sustained extensive damage and local residents were evacuated as a precaution. Enquiries are ongoing."

South Lanarkshire Council and Scottish Fire and Rescue have been asked for a comment.
