OUTDOOR parties or concerts shouldn’t be held before major Sinulog events like the seaborne and solemn processions so as not to burden police personnel.
That was the suggestion of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) to the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) after the former discovered that there will be a concert at the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda on Friday night, Jan. 17, 2020. The event is expected to last until dawn.
Col. Geovanie Maines, CCPO officer-in-charge, said police officers will have to be deployed in the area to secure concertgoers.
The seaborne and solemn processions will take place the next day, on Saturday, Jan. 18, while the Sinulog Grand Parade will be on Sunday, Jan. 19.
Maines said he would rather have the police officers concentrate on the major events, where more people are expected to show up. He said the men and women of the police force also have to rest.
“Imagine, there will be a street party at 10 p.m. (Friday) onward. The following day will be the solemn procession. Our people will suffer if they watch the party all night long and the following day will be another big event,” Maines said in Tagalog.
Even on the first day of December, there will already be activities at the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda that will require police security.
Maines said the Police Regional Office Central Visayas will deploy an augmentation force to help them secure activities during the Christmas season.
He said they’re anticipating traffic in the city to be extra heavy in the lead-up to Sinulog 2020. (AYB, RSR)
