Police urge public to report fake accounts

OFFICIALS of the Philippine National Police’s Regional Anti-Cyber Crime Unit-Central Visayas (Racu 7) are calling upon individuals to file complaints against those who reportedly created fake accounts on social media.

But even though some have presented themselves to file a complaint, Racu 7 Deputy Chief Police Lt. Col. Artemio Ricabo admitted that they also see some difficulty in tracing those behind the creation of fake social media accounts.

Ricabo told SunStar Cebu that since they started receiving complaints, he has ordered their personnel to conduct an investigation on the matter.

Ricabo said aside from reporting the matter to police, netizens can also report fake social media accounts to Facebook.

“What we are doing in Racu 7 is we are investigating and if possible, tracing those who are behind the creation of these fake accounts,” Ricabo said.

But Ricabo admitted that even their office cannot trace those who are making “dummy accounts” as anyone can do this as long as they have access to Facebook.

Ricabo, however, believes that there are certain groups that are behind the duplication of some legitimate Facebook accounts just to ruin people’s reputation. (AYB, JKV)
