Well, the Philippines officially went totally bonkers for Nov. 11 — aka 11.11, aka Singles’ Day — the now-international online shopping holiday that originated in China.
How bonkers, you ask? Bonkers enough to buy no fewer than 13 million diapers from e-commerce giant Lazada in a single day. (Oh, shit.)
An infographic posted on the company’s Facebook page today claimed that’s enough poop-catchers to cover the butts of all the newborns in the Philippines for a full week. Lazada added that Filipinos spent a collective 205 million minutes, or almost 3.5 million hours, shopping on their website. (Like we said, bonkers.)
Also sold were 240,000 pairs of sneakers, 10,000 pieces of luggage, and 348 cars. One single shopper even bought as much as PHP1.2 million (US$23,600) worth of products on the site.
Lazada and its rival Shopee pulled out all the stops in the days leading up to 11.11, and their ads appeared online practically everywhere. Shopee even signed up Senator and boxer Manny Pacquiao to join the effort, and his YouTube video touting the company reached almost 900,000 views.
Both companies also organized massive concerts to publicize 11.11. Lazada partnered with ABS-CBN for a show featuring the network’s stars, such as comedian Vice Ganda and singers Billy Crawford, Karylle, and James Reid.
Shopee’s concert, meanwhile, aired on rival network GMA, and featured its mouthpiece Jose Mari Chan, along with several brands giving audiences discounts and deals.
Shopee has yet to announce the figures from its Single’s Day sale.
Legend has it that the whole idea behind Singles’ Day started at China’s Nanjing University way back in 1993 as a way for students to celebrate being romantically unattached. But over the years (for reasons that are a bit murky, but probably involve the inherent commercialization of all holidays, as well as e-commerce behemoth Alibaba) it has become the largest online shopping day in Asia.
